What is a Firewall? | Definition, and Types

Firewall

It is a program or device that protects a computer while it is connected to the Internet from dangers.

The firewall checks all information and data from the Internet, or any other network, and then allows it to pass and enter the computer

If it is Compatible with the firewall settings, or if it excludes and expels it from malicious programs (Malware), such as viruses, spyware, or if it is not compatible with the settings of the firewall, the firewall is a boundary between the computer and the Internet.

  • After this proposition, we can compare the firewall to checkpoints or border posts in modern countries, which screen all entrants to the state.

Why is it called a Firewall?

The reason for naming the firewall is the one that works on the computer as the firewall: it is the similarity between the principle of its work, and the principle of work of the insulating firewall that is established in buildings, and which works to prevent the spread of fire from one room to another, or from one building to another.

The importance of a Firewall

The firewall is one of the most important steps that must be taken to protect the computer from intrusion by hackers and malicious programs.

Use a Firewall

All users of the famous operating system (Windows) can activate the firewall on this system, Microsoft has added the firewall to the operating system Windows XP, and in the versions that followed Windows XP has developed the firewall significantly.

In versions prior to Windows XP, it did not have a firewall. Usually, the Windows firewall is activated automatically, and if it is not, the user can do it easily by going to the Control Panel, entering Windows Fire wall, and activating it.

  • The user can install an external firewall program on his computer, so that he has two walls on his computer.

But it is not recommended to install an external firewall, if the firewall on Windows works perfectly; Because this may cause many problems in the device.

The user can take advantage of the firewall that is in the antivirus programs, which are usually paid programs.

What are the types of Firewall?

Question 01: What are the 3 types of firewalls?

Reply: The firewall is available in several forms and each of them has different functions depending on the purpose of its manufacture. These types are:

  1. Packet Fliter
  2. Application Filter
  3. NAT Firewll
  4. Proxies Filter
  5. Host Based
  6. Hybrid Firewall

Packet Fliter

It is called a stateless wall, where the system checks every data packet entering or leaving the network and accepts or blocks it based on the basis specified by the user, and therefore will be unable to know the state of the connection, and data packet filtering is effective and useful for users, as it works at the low level For TCP/IP, it is vulnerable to IP spoofing.

Application Filter

They are called middle firewalls (Proxy-based firewalls) and firewalls work for applications at the top level of (TCP / IP), such as browser traffic (TELNET), (FTP) and (Smtp) and its principle of operation depends on application firewalls to prevent Any unwanted external connection can access the protected devices and it analyzes the data that is sent and matches it with the firewall rules dedicated to the services and apps.

NAT Firewll

The firewall performs network address translation so that the devices connected to the network are protected by firewalls using Private Address Range.

Proxies Filter

This wall works by means of a device that has a program installed for the purposes of protection and it is a gateway from network to network for a specific application in the network (Specific Network Application), so that it is based on allowing requests to pass or not passing through and makes the proxy server tampering with internal systems from an external network difficult and not Allow network abuse, conversely, hackers may hijack a publicly available system and use it as a proxy server for their own personal ends and infiltrate devices.

Host Based

This type is in the form of a server or downloaded as a program on the personal computer, and the control and filtering of this type is in the form of a software product such as a firewall on operating system devices (Windows).

Hybrid Firewall

It is a wall that includes all types of firewalls and does their job, that is, it is comprehensive.

The firewall protects the device while it is connected to the Internet and protects it by examining data and information. It also places restrictions on some programs installed on the computer. There are two types:

  1. Software
  2. Hardware

Question 02: What is an example of firewall?

Reaply: Firewalls protect traffic at a computer's ports, which are the points where data is shared with external devices.

Here are 08 types of firewalls:

  1. Packet-filtering firewalls.
  2. Circuit-level gateways.
  3. Stateful inspection firewalls.
  4. Application-level gateways (a.k.a. proxy
  5. firewalls)
  6. Next-gen firewalls.
  7. Software firewalls.
  8. Hardware firewalls.
  9. Cloud firewalls.

  • A simple firewall, for example, can allow traffic from all IP addresses except those on a blacklist.

Question 03: What are the 4 types of firewalls?

  1. Packet filtering firewall.
  2. Circuit-level gateway.
  3. Application-level gateway (aka proxy firewall).
  4. Stateful inspection firewall.
  5. Next-generation firewall (NGFW).

Question 04: Is firewall should be on or off?

Reply: You should not turn off Windows Firewall unless you have another fire wall enabled.
